Check out what Kathy Davis Studios’ Melissa Schulz had to say about her favorite item below.

Hi there – Melissa Schulz here, Executive Director – Licensing, ’tis the season for our favorite things! One of my favorite items from the Kathy Davis Store is the votive candle. It is very beautifully designed – each side has unique images/messages. My two favorite votives are the “Dream” and “Anemones” designs. “Dream” is scented with an ocean breeze fragrance – very soft and subtle, like the hues of blue found in the design. “Anemones” is scented with a combination of jasmine and freesia – a very clean and fresh floral scent that pairs nicely with the floral design. At $11, the votive is priced and sized perfectly for a hostess gift or just to have on hand for those last minute gift giving occasions.

As we approach the holiday season, so many wonderful memories come to mind, but a favorite of mine is the “cutting of the greens.” My dad loved the outdoors, and while he hated cutting flowers out of the garden, he did seem to enjoy trimming our evergreen trees and bringing the fresh cut branches into our home so we could deck our halls the week before Christmas. The greens filed our home with such an intoxicating fragrance, and it was then that Christmas became real for me. I have such fond memories of helping him with this project.

Today, I am lucky to have my own yard full of evergreens and holly which I love to bring into our home, carrying out this treasured tradition…and even though my dad is no longer with us, I feel like he is smiling down as my daughter accompanies me with our ceremonial cutting of the greens (…now if only I could get her to help me with my Christmas card envelopes!)

Check out the first Card of the Week for December. The theme for all of December is Season’s Greetings. Let us know what you think of this card. Would you send it to your Hubby?

To my Husband at ChristmasI love so many things about the life we share…the way you keep my hands warm in the winter chill…your thoughtful little surprises that let me know you care…

those rare, but precious times we take just for the two of us…the wonderful memories we’ve made and the fun yet to come.

Thank you, honey, for all the joys you share with me.I love being married to you, and never more than at Christmas!

One of the comments I hear most often is, “You have designers working for you? What do they do? I thought YOU were the artist”.

While I serve as the Creative Visionary for my company, and still create most of the original art and copy for my brand, the designers here at KDS have become an invaluable piece to the whole puzzle. Without their amazing talents, I would never be able to deliver the 1000+ greeting cards we design every year, plus all of the fabric collections and licensed products for the gift and home industries. Also, in addition to the Kathy Davis brand, we develop original art for our Studio and Portfolio brands as well as many other creative projects.

One of the ways the designers get involved with the Kathy Davis brand is by innovating layouts for product development using the content I provide when I develop new collections.

Recently, I asked three of our newest designers, Laura, Ashley and Valerie, to each create some calendar layouts based on the art, patterns and writing that I developed for one of my newest collections – Fantasy Garden, Meadow’s Song or Awakenings.

Their designs delighted me so much that we decided to print and package them in CD cases as small desktop calendars for 2012! I’m having trouble deciding which one to use on my own desk…

Here are some of my favorite pages!

Editor’s note: You can find these desktop calendars in the Kathy Davis Online Store. They are great gifts with an affordable price tag!

It has been a very busy couple of weeks since the Quilt Market in Houston! But, better late than never, I wanted to share with you some photos from our visit.

We were thrilled with the response to our new Sweet Birdie fabric collection! Here are some of the adorable creations featuring Sweet Birdie.

Another highlight was the rain poncho we discovered in the Westminster Free Spirit booth that was made with our Happiness oilcloth fabric. (I had to try it on for size!)

Westminster’s booth was ablaze in color!

Lauren and Melissa were stylin’ with their Kathy Davis bags.

I was so happy to see many old and new friends at the show!

And, finally, I must share some of the exciting quilts from the Gallery. I particularly love the bold, bright modern versions, as you can tell…

One thing that I am very grateful for is the wonderful team of people who work at Kathy Davis Studios. Honestly, this group is unique in the fact that each and every one of them never shies away from an opportunity to help others. Whether it is is simply sharing awesome snacks every Friday, rescuing stray kitties behind the dumpster or helping console a team member who is having a tough day, each one of them is always ready to lend a helping hand.

I so appreciate those whose kindness makes the world a brighter place. I was fortunate to have two parents who always went out of their way for others. For many, many years after she retired from her job, my mother, Ruth, volunteered at Manna on Main Street in Lansdale, where she made and served warm bowls of soup to those hungry and in need. Today, at almost 94 years old, my mother is unable to help others the way she used to, but even in declining health, she spreads sunshine at her assisted living home.

In honor of my mother, we, at KDS, help out Manna from time to time with food donations. This year is no different. When we asked if anyone on our team was willing to assist by donating nonperishable food items, cooked turkeys or volunteering to help serve at Manna the day of Thanksgiving, we were overwhelmed with the response from our team!!!

(This photo was taken a bit prematurely – We more than doubled the donation you see here)

It really does my heart good to be surrounded by such a giving group.

Wishing all of you a wonderful Thanksgiving!

postscript – since this blog entry was initially written, my mother passed away peacefully on November 20th, surrounded by her family. While we will miss her immeasurably, she leaves behind a great legacy of selfless giving, unshakable faith, and a love and devotion to her family that will continue to inspire all who knew her. I am truly thankful for all the gifts she has shared with me.

Last week I was honored to be a part of the Sunshine Foundation’s 35th Anniversary Celebration held at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children in Philadelphia. Founded by former policeman, Bill Sample, the foundation has granted over 36,000 wishes to chronically ill and physically handicapped children and their families.

(Me with Bill Sample)

I was asked to design a print that was beautifully framed and presented to donors who help make these dreams possible.

It was wonderful to meet some of the families who have received dreams from the foundation, and a moving experience to watch two children being granted their wishes to visit Disney World and stay at Sunshine’s Dream Village.

St. Christopher’s Hospital was the perfect spot for the celebration. It was here back in the early 70’s that the children who frequented the hospital for their medical treatments touched the former policeman and inspired his quest to make their dreams come true.
