The Handmade Gallery is now OPEN!
We are thrilled to announce that we have added a Handmade Gallery to our online shop! We teamed up with a handful of our creative friends to create one-of-a-kind items using fabric from the Kathy Davis fabric collections. Take a peek and browse the shop by clicking here. I am so proud and happy to introduce a new book that I have added to my online store. “I Put the Can in Cancer” was written by a very talented guy and good friend, Christian Patchell - “Patch” for short. I am hoping that many of you remember Patch as my very first interview for “Inside the Artist’s Studio”.
I was quite honored to have been asked by Patch to write the foreword for his book. Sharing that foreword with you here…with the hope that you will be inspired to purchase Patch’s book for yourself – or to share with a friend or family member who may have been touched by cancer.
It is rare to meet someone with the talent of Christian Patchell, especially when it’s embodied in such a truly nice guy.
Rarer still when those qualities are combined with the character and inner strength that have not only survived, but have become stronger when tested by the menacing threat of the big “C”.
I first met Patch about 10 years ago when his girlfriend Melissa, also a talented artist, started working with my company, Kathy Davis Studios. Since we create artwork that is licensed for all sorts of product from home décor to greeting cards, it was karma that our paths would eventually cross. Very good karma.
When Melissa told us that Patch was going for some medical testing, and when we heard his diagnosis, we did our best to be brave for him. And all through his fight against the disease, we followed his journey through Melissa...feeling helpless...but never giving up hope.
I developed a deep appreciation for the relationship between Melissa and Christian - especially during this difficult time. I knew that they collaborated with their art and gave each other inspiration, but little did I know how deeply that was rooted. Their lives, their art, their shared studio, their apartment all reflect their love for each other – and for the work they do. Their lives are a testament to a collaboration that enriches them both.
It is remarkable to see Patch today, healthy, vibrant and strong, and prolific as always. It should come as no surprise to find out that through his difficult journey, he documented each stage in his sketchbook. It was one thing he could control … going deeper into his spirit as his body battled its demons.
The resulting book “I put the Can in Cancer” comes alive through Patch’s skillfully drawn characters as he recounts in words his fears and feelings at the time of his treatment. Unless one travels the same path as a cancer survivor, I don't think we can truly understand the shock, pain, confusion and fear that that disease can have over one's life. In spite of that, Patch teaches us that cancer cannot rob the essence of what’s really inside. Joy, hope, and strength cannot only survive cancer, but they can flourish, and Patch proves that. I am proud to know him… and I am honored to help introduce this important work of (he)art and soul to the world.
May it inspire joy and hope in all who read it.
