A Day of Color

Katie and Laura here. As Kathy had mentioned in her previous post, we were so excited to head to NYC last Sunday for the second day of what was a two-day workshop on the creative business on blogging. The workshop was hosted by Holly Becker from the ever-so-popular Decor8 blog and her friend and fellow blogger Leslie Sherwing whose gorgeous blog A Creative Mint is one of our personal favorites. Day one, which Kathy attended, was more writing and content based, whereas day 2 was purely about the visuals (Yay!). Leslie, who primarily ran Sunday’s class, is a master of all things pretty.
Here are some of the highlights from what we took away that Sunday:
They really emphasized the importance of storytelling through photography and how it’s not only about a product we might be featuring but the story behind it. It’s important to draw people in and share the process with people of how you got the product where it is today and why you made certain design decisions. This will help build your brand, your followers, and create a loyal connection.
Being inspired! Don’t just look at what’s “in” or even at things from your field. You’ll always be trying to catch up and it’ll never happen. Take a fresh approach by looking at different things. This could simply include looking at other cultures.
With digital mood boards becoming very popular they touched a little bit about the benefits of hands on vs. digital inspiration/mood boards. When you “pin” things on Pinterest, you see your boards how everyone else does. When you build your own tangible mood board you start to see things differently and can creating textures and layers.
This one was a favorite for us…ALWAYS use natural lighting. And a photo can simply just be PRETTY! How refreshing!

Paul Lowe from Sweet Paul Magazine even stopped in to say hi to Holly, Leslie and all of us students! What a sweet surprise!
We are so excited to take what we learned and put it into practice. Stay tuned…

Joy Through Art – My inspiring design team!
One of the comments I hear most often is, “You have designers working for you? What do they do? I thought YOU were the artist”.
While I serve as the Creative Visionary for my company, and still create most of the original art and copy for my brand, the designers here at KDS have become an invaluable piece to the whole puzzle. Without their amazing talents, I would never be able to deliver the 1000+ greeting cards we design every year, plus all of the fabric collections and licensed products for the gift and home industries. Also, in addition to the Kathy Davis brand, we develop original art for our Studio and Portfolio brands as well as many other creative projects.
One of the ways the designers get involved with the Kathy Davis brand is by innovating layouts for product development using the content I provide when I develop new collections.
Recently, I asked three of our newest designers, Laura, Ashley and Valerie, to each create some calendar layouts based on the art, patterns and writing that I developed for one of my newest collections - Fantasy Garden, Meadow’s Song or Awakenings.
Their designs delighted me so much that we decided to print and package them in CD cases as small desktop calendars for 2012! I’m having trouble deciding which one to use on my own desk…
Here are some of my favorite pages!

Editor’s note: You can find these desktop calendars in the Kathy Davis Online Store.
They are great gifts with an affordable price tag!

A life in balance is an elusive thing. We’re faced with decisions every day that either bring about a deeper sense of wholeness and contentment, or a greater degree of stress and anxiety. My art is often a reflection of these two forces in my own life, and my ongoing efforts to understand what balance looks like for me. When I’m involved in the creative process, when I’m putting paint to paper or viewing the world through a camera lens, things become clear for me, and my work informs my life. The pieces in this collection reflect some of my thoughts and musings on the idea of balance, and the notion that one’s perspective changes everything.

Artist Trading Card Gallery Show Recap
Last Friday night’s KDS Gallery Opening for our Artist Trading Card Show was a great collaboration of creatives. From young children to adults, all who participated in creating and trading were drawn together for the sole purpose of being creative. There were many discussions of technique and subject matter, as well as a lot of laughs. Below are a couple of photos to highlight some of the ATCs on display.
This unique opening was also chronicled live on Twitter. Photos of the ATCs were shared over the internet for people everywhere to see. You’ve got to love modern day technology! While we have your “hi-tech” attention, it’s a great time to remind you to “follow us” on Twitter, “like us” on Facebook, and check out the constant stream of new videos and visuals we are adding to YouTube and Flickr. Please tell your friends to keep up with us too, it’s going to be an exciting year at Kathy Davis Studios!
